Good Morning Musicians,

Our first rehearsals are approaching, and we want everyone to start this season on the strongest possible foundation. Showcase assignments have been set, and while your directors will focus on the visual and technical aspects, my role this season is to help you internalize the music.

Playing notes and rhythms correctly is only the beginning. True musicianship comes when you understand the message behind the music and can take your listeners on a musical journey. That is the level we’re aiming for.

Before your first rehearsal, you must complete the following for all five songs:

• Changes

• Paranoid

• Dreamers

• Suicide Solution

• Momma I’m Coming Home
  

Each song must be roadmapped and written as a lead sheet. A proper lead sheet should allow any musician to pick it up and perform the song immediately. This means including:

• Key and time signature

• Chord progressions and riffs for each section

• Number of bars and structure of the song
  

This will not be easy at first, but developing this skill will strengthen you as musicians. If this work is not completed for all five songs, you will not be permitted into rehearsal. Seek help beforehand if needed.

Parents: Please plan to attend the first five minutes of rehearsal. Students will present their assignments in front of both myself and you. This will serve as an important measure of accountability and work ethic.
