On a cozy Tuesday evening, I found myself immersed in the lively atmosphere of a local venue. The gentle clinking of glasses, the murmur of conversations, and the delightful aroma of fried chicken and macaroni and cheese filled the air, creating a truly happy place. Then, at 8:00 P.M., a strong, confident voice boomed, "How's everyone doing tonight?" My attention, along with everyone else's, was drawn to the stage. A group of kids, no older than 13, picked up their instruments. As a professional musician, I admit a flicker of doubt crossed my mind: "This is an adult venue. Can these kids really hold their own?"
A Performance That Captivated
The moment the drums, guitar, and bass hit their first synchronized notes, all doubts vanished. The precision behind each strum and beat was impeccable. The entire room perked up, captivated. For three hours, these young musicians commanded the stage, their energy intertwining with an adult professional band sharing the spotlight. To witness such talent and a seamless connection among musicians was awe-inspiring. The roar of the audience and whispered "Wow, how are they this good?" were testaments to their undeniable skill.

The Arts: A Source of Healing
While many saw a remarkable performance, I perceived something deeper. As someone who understands the intricate process behind artistic creation, I witnessed the profound power of the arts in action. We've all heard the older generations lament about "kids these days" and their perceived lack of respect or their desire for instant gratification. Every generation faces its unique struggles, but I want to focus on Generation Z and Generation Alpha. Statistically, these generations face higher rates of anxiety, depression, and mental health challenges due to factors like social media, economic pressures, and technological immersion.
My question is, what are we doing about it? While I deeply respect the medical field and its crucial role, is awareness and medication alone enough? Studies consistently highlight the incredible healing and disciplinary power of the arts. So, why are arts programs being cut in so many communities and schools, unless they're in affluent areas or championed by dedicated advocates?
Understanding the Impact of Arts in Our Communities
In the Southwest and West Suburbs of Chicago, I wonder if the transformative power of the arts is truly understood and embraced. Is exposure what's missing? Those three hours watching those young musicians perform profoundly impacted me. I saw not just talent, but also:
Discipline in mastering their instruments.
Confidence to perform fearlessly before an audience.
Respect for their craft and their audience, fully present and not distracted by devices.
Humility in giving compliments and credit where it was due.
These young individuals display these principles, which will undoubtedly shape their lives. By validating and nurturing these habits, we can empower them to become the leaders who will positively shape a culture that older generations sometimes view as problematic.
A Personal Reflection on the Arts
I don't just believe in the arts; I live them. Recently, I had the honor of speaking with one of the students from the adult band, who remembered me from when she was 13. When I asked about her life, her face lit up with pride. "I'm playing music and studying to become a nurse," she beamed. Another shared, "I'm studying to be a doctor." I was curious about how they find time for gigs amid their demanding studies. Their response was beautiful and filled with conviction: "It's my healing and my therapy, especially when schooling gets tough." The arts are not limiting; they are empowering. You can pursue both your passions and your profession.
